These are the main parts to configure for a drifting setup:
- Driveline: rear-drive-wheels.
- Differential: locked or limited slip.
- Steering: wide steering angle with no ackerman
- Steering Aids: enable Steering Help for automatic counter-steering.
- Traction Control: configure custom slip and find a proper slip value for drifting, typically between 8 and 20 m/s depending on the type of car and the drifting speed.
This video shows all that combined in VPP.
Note that there are no "perfect values for a car". Every car is unique and requires a careful process of configuration, fine-tuning, tests and refinements. VPP is an advanced vehicle asset requiring good knowledge of vehicle mechanics, car tuning and real-world set-up techniques. In many cases setting up vehicles and getting good results is almost as difficult as in real vehicles.
Useful tips:
- Start by collecting as many specifications as possible from the real car model you want to simulate. Here's a list of the typical specifications you'll need. The more data you can collect, the more coherent the result will be.
- Configure your vehicle as described here. Use values from the specifications whenever possible.
- Refine the setup based on the observed vs. expected behavior. Here's a list of advice on setting up the car covering many topics such as handling, suspension, aerodynamics, driving aids, and drifting.
